NBA Super Bowl XLIV: Pacers vs. Hornets

It's 2010 Super Bowl XLIV (44) mania, and every angle of every corner of every angle will be covered in the next couple of weeks by the real media. So what can we do in the blogging community? Make up more angles!

How about this: What if we somehow tried to predict who would win the Super Bowl based on the NBA counterparts in their respective cities? Makes perfect sense, doesn't it?

If Super Bowl XLIV were to be played by the NBA versions of the NFL teams participating in Miami, the Indianapolis Colts would be substituted for the Indiana Pacers while the New Orleans Saints would be replaced by the New Orleans Hornets. Still with us?

While the Hornets are probably (definitely) the better basketball team, how would the teams fare on the football field? Let's take a look at some of the key players on the rosters and match them up with their counterparts.

Indianapolis Colts/Pacers

QB Peyton Manning = SF Danny Granger
The unquestioned centerpiece of the team, providing a mostly offensive attack. Good enough to build a team around with the potential to be great.

RB Joseph Addai = PG T.J. Ford
Players who showed great promise and have since slowed down. The Pacers can't wait to unload T.J. Ford, and you might be surprised at how much the Colts may share that sentiment about Addai.

WR Reggie Wayne = SF Mike Dunleavy
Good players and often underappreciated. Dunleavy has had injury issues so it is difficult to really compare, but when these two are healthy they must be accounted for. Neither will mind carrying the load or playing second fiddle and helping teammates.

TE Dallas Clark = PF Troy Murphy
Tough competitors who put up way better numbers than you would expect them to. Murphy has been one of the more underrated forwards in the game for years while Dallas Clark is just now getting the attention he deserves after the departure of Marvin Harrison.

DE Dwight Freeney = C Roy Hibbert
This one is a stretch, considering Hibbert is still growing and Freeney is a veteran leader at this point--but Hibbert has that potential. He showed in college how much he could impact the game, and opposing offenses know that that's all Freeney does.

LB Gary Brackett = C Jeff Foster
Nothing flashy out of either player, but mainstays in their team's lineup for a reason. Consistently solid players.

New Orleans Saints/Hornets

QB Drew Brees = PG Chris Paul
Okay, this one is too easy. The similarities between quarterbacks and point guards are clear, but you'd be hard pressed to find a better match than this in the league. Both Brees and Paul are fundamentally sound but at the same time flashy, and their play dictates largely, if not nearly entirely, the success of their respective clubs.

FS Darren Sharper = C Emeka Okafor
The two big off-season acquisitions in Nawlins have paid dividends this season, both on the defensive side of the ball. While Emeka might actually be a defensive downgrade from Tyson Chandler (who they traded away to acquire Okafor), the presence of the former Husky can't be denied. Obviously, neither can that of Pro Bowl safety Sharper, acquired through Free Agency from the Vikings.

WR Marques Colston = PG Darren Collison
Both young players taken relatively late in the draft and expected to do little, who have burst onto the scene and played huge roles in their team's success.

RB Reggie Bush = SF Peja Stojakovic
Considering the achievements both have been able to garner in the past, you expect more from them. Bush was dominant at USC, and while he's having a good playoffs, it's impossible to say he's lived up to his hype. Just a couple of years ago Peja was carrying the Hornets to one of the top seeds in the Western Conference Playoffs. Now, his play has dropped off along with his teams. Both teams need these guys to perform to be really great.

LB Jonathan Vilma = PF David West
Remarkably great fits on their teams, as West goes together beautifully with Chris Paul and Vilma is the exact perfect fit for the Saints defense.

TE Jeremy Shockey = SF Jamesy Posey
Overpaid, overrated recent free agent acquisitions who show just enough productivity to keep you hoping that they will live up to their billing. Still, it's hard to argue with them, as they have both been winners throughout their careers.

So there's that. Amidst all the rehashed stories of Super Bowl week(s), this is our attempt to create a new story. At least we tried.

And for the record, we'll take the Hornets.

2009 NBA Draft Prop Bets Go 5-2

Our 2009 NBA Draft Prop Bets were fairly successful, finishing with a record of 5-2. That record is terribly misleading though, since we're including the prop that Blake Griffin will play for the Clippers this year, which nets us $1.18 off a $100 bet.

Still, not a bad showing at the draft.

Our other props that won included betting Tyler Hansbrough to be selected before Chase Budinger, and another to go before Wayne Ellington, though both of those were won with significant chalk. We also correctly picked Hasheem Thabeet to be selected before James Harden, though again, there was plenty of juice on that one.

Our most profitable win was correctly predicting that Darren Collison would be selected in the first round (+105), and we didn't even have to sweat it out. The Hornets nabbed Collison with the 21st pick in the draft.

So, until next year, thanks for joining us for our 2009 NBA Draft coverage.

Nuggets Give Us 4-0 NBA Playoff Record

The Nuggets came through again in their series against the Hornets, this time winning by a count of 108 to 93, covering the -6 1/2 spread.

Our Free NBA Picks, as the title proclaims, are now 4-0 in the playoffs, and 12-5 in 2009 (71%).

Maybe we should stick to basketball...

A Free NBA Pick For Tonight

We have a Free NBA Pick tonight, which is good news, since the picks are 3-0 in the playoffs and 11-5 overall in 2009 (which is 69%!).

We are riding the Nuggets for game two against the Hornets, just as we did in game one.

Nuggets -6 1/2 over the Hornets

Good luck!

Nuggets Make it 3-0

Our Free NBA Picks are catching fire at just the right time.

The Nuggets beat the Hornets 113-84 in game one of their playoff series, covering the -6 spread and giving us a 3-0 NBA playoff record.

Overall, our Free NBA Picks have won four straight and are 11-5 in 2009 (69%).

Be sure to add us to your RSS feed and follow us on twitter to make sure you get these picks while they're hot!

Lakers Improve Free NBA Playoff Picks to 2-0

The Lakers squeaked out a cover against the Jazz in game one of their playoff series today, winning 113-100 to cover the -12 spread.

More importanly, LA gives us a 2-0 record in the postseason thus far, and 10-5 in 2009 (67%).

We'll hope to stay hot later tonight when the Nuggets take on the Hornets.

Keep following our hot Free NBA Picks and go Nuggets!

Two Free NBA Playoff Picks

When we said we wanted to play more NBA games, we meant it, but that doesn't mean we're ever going to a force a pick that doesn't have value.

We just wanted to clear that up, because today we have two Free NBA Picks.

Lakers -12 over the Jazz

Nuggets -6 over Hornets

As you can see, we like both home favorites today in the West. Our Free NBA Picks are 9-5 in 2009 (64%), and 1-0 in the playoffs! Woo hoo!

Good luck!

Cavaliers Cover... Again

We might as well scrap our Free NBA Picks system and just tail the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Our Free NBA Picks are 2-1 since our re-release, and despite our early struggles, they are 4-0 when we bet on the Cavs.

It's no coincidence, of course. The Cavs, who beat the Hornets 92-78 tonight to cover a -3 spread, are 27-11 against the spread this year including 16-4 ATS at home. It helps that they are 31-7 on the season and 20-0 at home straight up.

Either way, we might foolishly start to force a few plays when they have any value at all, rather than stick to our thus far disappointing system.

Free NBA Picks Turn to the Cavs Again

We're a little late with this one, but get on it if you still can.

Cavaliers -3 over Hornets

Our Free NBA Picks are 3-0 when betting the Cavs, and hopefully we can add to that tonight.

Good luck!

Free NBA Pick Are 100% in 2009!

Our Free NBA Picks are dominating the new year, boasting a 100% record in '09. Take that, Vegas Watch.

Nevermind that we've technically sort of kind of maybe only had one 2009 pick, we're still perfect this year in the NBA. On the season? Not so much.

Still, we'll take whatever moral victories we can get, especially if they coincide with an actual victory.

Our Free NBA Picks started taking off in late January last year, so hopefully the 116-90 win by the Jazz over the Hornets to cover the -4 spread is a sign of things to come.

We'll try to maintain this record for as long as we can, obviously, but don't forget how much these picks struggled in 2008.

Return of Our Free NBA Picks

After a rough start, we pulled the plug on our Free NBA Picks and decided to wait them out until we had a better sample size for our statistical data. Last year, if you recall, we didn't post our Free NBA Picks until late January. By doing so, we had all the information we needed entered into our spreadsheets to ensure the success of the picks.

This year, however, we started posting them right away, eager to repeat the 67% season from last year. Clearly, that was a mistake.

Today, though, we finally have another Free NBA Pick after a long layoff and a mini-overhaul of the system. If you play it, do so with caution, at least for now.

Jazz -4 over the Hornets

If ever there was a time to follow Vegas Watch's advice to fade our plays, this might be it.

MLB Tonight, NBA Futures

Despite the deciding game seven of the Hornets and Spurs being played tonight, we do not have a play on this game that fits our system. We do, however, have one MLB play for tonight.

Chicago Cubs -1 1/2 (+125) over the Houston Astros

Lance Berkman and the Astros are hot, but Alfonso Soriano and the Cubs are hotter. Our Free MLB Picks went 3-0 on Saturday, and we expect to add another win to our record.

In addition to the MLB play tonight, we have some NBA Future Bets on the Pistons/Celtics Eastern Conference Finals. These are not Free NBA Picks, but are plays we are making nonetheless. They are:

Pistons to win the Series (+115 at Bodog)

Will the Celtics Win a Road Game in this Series? NO (+165 at Bodog)

So there you have them. We like the Pistons to advance the NBA Finals and the Celtics road woes to continue.

For tonight, though, just the Cubs to beat up on the Stros. Good luck!
UPDATE: We took the Pistons in the series at +115 odds.

Spurs Cover!

Make that 20-1 in favor of the home teams in the second round of the NBA Playoffs.

The Spurs beat up on the Hornets, as expected, by a final score of 99-80, easily covering the -7 spread. The Spurs win makes our Free NBA Picks an impressive 7-2 in the last nine games, as Manu Ginobili and Co. forced game seven against Peja Stojakovic and the young Hornets.

The 19 point win also means that every game in this particular series has been decided by ten points or more--something to consider when betting on the deciding seventh game.

We plan on continuing this hot streak, so long as you plan on following right along with us.

There's No Place Like Home

Through 20 games in the second round of the NBA Playoffs, the home team is a combined 19-1. 19-1! The Spurs have home court tonight against the Hornets, and facing elimination, our numbers indicate that this should be another home court blowout.

San Antonio Spurs -7 over the New Orleans Hornets

Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, and the rest of the defending champs should be able to contain Chris Paul and the up and coming Hornets, at least on their own court.

Our Free NBA Picks are 6-2 in the last eight games, so hopefully the Spurs will keep the momentum going.

Good luck!

Hornets and Mavs Go Over

We needed the Hornets and Mavs to score 193 points tonight. They scored 230.

The Hornets 127-103 victory in Game 2 of the series helped us even our playoff Free NBA Pick record back to 2-2, and our overall NBA Free Pick record to 42-22.

Thanks to countless buckets, including Chris Paul taking on Dirk Nowitzki for a lay-up, we're back up to .500 for the playoffs and hoping, oddly enough, to get back into regular-season form.

We tinkered with the numbers in the system a little bit prior to this game due to our concerns that, well, the last two Free NBA Pick losses were blowouts. We should be poised for a nice run with the updated stats added to the formula, so hop on and enjoy the ride.

One Playoff Pick Tonight

We have one Free NBA Pick tonight as we look to get back on track:

Dallas Mavericks/New Orleans Hornets OVER 193

Good luck!

Jazz and Hornets Over

We have one Free NBA Pick today with moderate value.

Utah Jazz/New Orleans Hornets OVER 210

Our Free NBA Picks are 34-18, which is 65%, including back-to-back wins.

Friday, February 1, 2008

Two Free NBA Picks

The Free NBA Picks are 8-2 in the last ten, and tonight we have two of them.

New Orleans Hornets -2 over the Sacramento Kings

And our play of the day...

Los Angeles Clippers +7 over the Minnesota Timberwolves

We put two units on the play of the day, and one unit on any other computer picks. It's tempting to bet more since they're hitting 80%, but we'll stick to our guns. Good luck!
